If
this is the first time you are reading about Stephanie Rose who used to be
known as Dapo Adaralegbe, you must have miss many mind-blowing throw-ups about
her. Ooh did I actually use her for him? Him, really? Is she a man? Haa, somebody
spare me this headache! Actually, Stephanie rose was a controversial Nigerian
transgender, born sometime in the 70’s to an OAU professor father and mother.
His oddity started when he was still a student of law at OAU in the 90’s, then
he used to dress like a woman with lipsticks, eyelashes and so on. The oddity
was a huge shock to the university community as at that time because the issue
of gayism, lesbianism and bisexuality was not in the mainstream of public life
as it is today.
Stephanie
will not change as time goes on rather his situation took a trajectory as he
now engaged in sex with male folks, he, acting as the woman. It was reported at
a time when he was taken to OAU teaching hospital due to thorough bleeding from
his anus after sex with a male partner. Yet, Stephanie did not appreciate that
there is no mistake in creation; that man is meant to be man and woman to be
woman.
As
a result of his identity crisis, he was expelled from OAU in 2001 after several
psycho-therapy on him proved unyielding.
Stephanie
in one of his interview said: ‘’since I was small, I realise that I have this
feeling that I was a woman. I used to paint myself up and wear girls’ clothes.
Nobody stopped or cautioned me. My mother later died when I was 11 years old.
My father has other wives and no one particularly bothered about me. I am the
last child of my mother, she had four of us’’
‘’the
truth is that I had gone too far, and I don’t want to talk about my family in
this issue. I have slept with a lot of people but my problem is that they were
not faithful to me. They were not committed; we just have sex and they go away.
I wish to have a committed partner that is why I have been trying to get real
lover, one that will care about me. In the alternative, I will like to relocate
abroad where my kind exist’’.
The
interview was granted on 15, October 2003, few month afterward, he travelled to
Amsterdam, Netherlands and shortly after he was transformed into a full woman
through surgery. Dapo Adaralegbe now lives as a woman: his skin now looks
supple and brighter, she now has breast, real shape of a woman and yes vagina
too (what cannot happen in this complex world).
Meanwhile,
a lot of people have passed comment on his circumstance, some attributing his
problem to demonic infestation, some felt Dapo is a reflection of depraved 21st
century while majority heaped the blame on his parent.
However,
PunditAfrica feel deeply concerned about this kind of happening- it is
considered as a morality war on African values. Frankly, the time has come when
the line must be drawn between common values and freedom because to say the
least, Africa is turning upside down, Africa is on the precipice of
self-destruction. And whether we perish together or own up to corrective values
and get flourished depends on the actions we take right from now.
In
kindness, persons like Dapo are many on the soil of Africa only but in the
shadow because of fear of societal persecution and stigmatisation but they will
not continue to hide, a time will come when they will demand for freedom to do
what they consider good for them or organise self into a sort of terrorist
group and terrorise our territories- the faster we act, the better.
If
care is not taken, in the near, persons will walk the street of Oshodi or Ikoyi
barely naked, one day man and man will be having sex in a bus stop so too woman
and woman. With this claims being reality, the discussion relevant now is that
which constantly ask: should African states embrace absolute freedom or own up
to our traditional values and morality?
It
should be make clear that absolute freedom is nothing but an instrument of
social destruction. For any society to thrive there must be a sort of control
and the fact that any gathering must have a sort of a leader that call the shot
only proves this. The ignorance of those countries that are bent on selling
absolute freedom to Africa is laughable because someday their individual citizens
will ask for self-governance- it is freedom; very soon, some citizens will
demand for break from tax- choice to pay or not to pay tax bothers on freedom
too.
Therefore,
the safety option for Africa is definitely the maintenance of our traditional
values- morally sanctified values that deeply align itself with religious
dictate.
With
the forcefulness of complex modernity, how do we maintain morality? There is no
magic to achieving this, however, the fundamental thing is that on individual
basis we must become lively to our responsibilities on all front.
As
in the case of Dapo (Stephanie), all the blame is to his parent because they
were never observant of the kid they born. It is a clear fact that Dapo ended
up like this because he was emotionally frustrated when he was raped by a male
friend of his cousin at a tender age of six. Meanwhile the parent he is
supposed to confide in were not there. So his frustration had grown to maturity
when at 14years his daddy noticed his identity problem. At that time,
counselling cannot achieve much on him anymore because his sense of identity
had already crashed.
His
story will have been different if he had had a ready, observant and responsive
parent.
Exclusively,
good Parenting is an element of African values, therefore as a parent it is
your duty to ensure your ward is mould into the moral fold of the society.
Having
said that, it is important to charge the government of African states not to
bow to western pressure that seeks to foist iniquities called absolute freedom
on us. Rather stand up tall against gayism, lesbianism, homosexuality and
bisexuality- they are against nature, it is un-African.
